Q: Is recording in a studio expensive?
A: First, it depends on the quality and speed of the engineer compared to their hourly rate. Although some studios charge half as much as Sonic Audio, they work at half the speed. It's always a good idea to get samples from engineers and ask how much the artist spent to get that quality of recording from the engineer. Also, it's more expensive depending on the talent and speed of the musician. Some people can sing it in one take (1 Take Wonder). Some, it takes 30 takes to get something good!!
Q: What is the most important aspect about studios to consider when shopping for services?
A: Quality versus time and cost. The hourly rate may be deceiving. The old thought that cheaper is better does not hold up in the art of audio production. You get what you pay for. The most important thing to consider is the engineer's ears. Sonic Audio continues to have rates at the lower end of the industry with proven quality ("ears"). We produce an $105.00 an hour sound for considerably less. See the Rates and Cost page for more details.
Q: What questions should I ask when shopping for a recording studio?
A: 1. Who do you currently work with and can I contact them for a reference? Yes!
2. Do you have repeat business from your clients? Yes!
3. Do you have sufficient gear to handle my style and genre of music? Yes!
4. Do you have experience mixing and engineering my style of music? Yes!
5. What client is the most successful and do you still work with them? Yes, Take 6, currently tour!
6. Would you be willing to take on my project and treat it as your own? Yes! I will always treat it as my own!
AND LASTLY!!
7. How much do you charge and WHY do you charge so little/much?
As you can see, asking the right questions will ultimately set you up for a quality and great sounding recording.
Ask about everything and listen to confirm the studio can produce what you want for your required budget.
